The Atlantic Ocean
and North Sea
• are better able to disperse
most pollutants because
they are closely connected
to the circulating flow of
the world ocean.
Acid rain,
a major indicator of air pollution,
is most severe where population
density is high and a high standard of
living leads to intense resource use.

The Baltic sea,
like the Mediterranean and Black

Acid rain in the former communist states
is also high, despite lower populations and living
standards. These areas have the world's highest
per capita emissions from burning oil and gas.

The Danube Dam Dispute.
A joint project of Austria, Hungary,
and what was then Czechoslovakla

by Hungary for environmental reasons.
However, Slovakia built its portion
