To my child
I've loved you since the day
you came into my life,
I'll love you long after I'm gone.
In all the days ahead,
I ask for your love
and patience.
I ask you to remember back
to the patience and love
you were given.
The time freely spent to hear
of your days at school,
to treat your problems
as the heavy burdens
they were for you at
the time -
never to belittle but
to encourage.
The patience to see you through.
Whether it was teaching you
to color, read, ride a bike,
drive a car - you were given
all the time that it took.
Allow that time to me now
while I collect my thoughts,
walk along beside you,
enjoy a meal with you,
or simply a phone call.
Remember that for me it is
important just to be with you,
to laugh, to remember,
to enjoy and to share.
When you feel frustrated or
impatient, instead identify
that it was my hand that
held yours when you learned
to take those
first important steps.
Extend that hand and love to
me now at this
point in our lives.
And remember, I love you
Mom
